The chemical ingredients are stored in glass ampules with inert gas making them shelf-stable and at-the-ready indefinitely.  Squeeze the swab to break both ampules, shake to mix, squeeze to wet the tip, and rub it on the suspect area.  Keep them in your pocket, locker, toolbox, glove box, and spill kit.
